The last week of the summer term has been jam-packed. Our students have embraced a wide range of exciting learning opportunities.
From biology fieldwork in Aberystwyth and geography in Llandudno, to court visits and entrepreneurial podcasting, their experiences have been both inspiring and enriching.
They tackled global issues like antimicrobial resistance, explored engineering and STEAM projects, and collaborated with industry leaders at Sellafield, Beverston, and the Natural History Museum. Whether designing social enterprises, experimenting with materials, or building sandcastles in science, our students have shown creativity, curiosity, and commitment.

Key Dates: Results Day
- A Level Results Day will take place on Thursday, 14th August at 9am - Click here to read a results day guide for everything you need to know.
The UCAS Results Hub officially opens at 8 am on Results Day, which will tell you if you've achieved your accepted offer. That'll give you a clue to your grades, but it won't actually tell you what you've got. You'll need to get your results from school or college for all the details.
- GCSE Results Day will take place on Thursday, 21st August at 9am.

As in previous years, we will be running a staggered return for students in September. This helps us to introduce our new students to the building in a calm and organised way. Please check the time and date for your year group next year.

Tuesday 2nd September
- Ignite (Year 9) Cohort will start at 9am and finish at 4pm.
Wednesday 3rd September
- Ignite second day starts at 9am and finishes at 3pm.
- New Year 10 students (joining us for the first time in September 2024) start at 9am and finish at 3pm.
Thursday 4th September
- Ignite third day starts at 9am and finishes at 4pm.
- All Year 10 students (including those returning from Ignite) start at 9am and finish at 4pm.
- Year 12 students to collect timetables. Start at 10am and finish at 4pm.

Friday 5th September: Everyone in
- Year 11 starts at 9am and finishes at 4pm.
- Year 13 starts at 9am (or in time for their first timetabled lesson) and finishes at 4pm.
- Students in Year 10 (who were with us in Ignite) and Year 11 will be expected to attend a progress meeting IN FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM with a parent during induction week. This will be a dedicated time to discuss how your child has progressed this year and ensure readiness for the coming year.
Appointments will be bookable via Schoolcloud; however, these meetings are IN PERSON.

Biology Field Trip
Year 12 A-Level Biology students applied their ecology sampling skills to investigate the differences in species diversity in exposed and sheltered shores in Aberystwyth.
|
|

Students stayed at Aberystwyth University as part of their three-day residential. The university is renowned for excellence in marine and ecology studies.
|
|
|
This hands-on fieldwork experience not only enhanced students’ understanding of ecological principles but also gave them a valuable insight into university-level research and potential future careers in environmental science.

Student Interview Entrepreneur Podcasts
We had another of the podcast series with our Ignite students interviewing Alex Keyter from Generative Minds, an AI education software and training company. The students got to hear what inspired Alex and how he made the journey from school to his company. The entire series was set up and run in conjunction with the University of Liverpool Business School, and all the podcasts will be available over the summer to listen back to.

Year 12 Geography Trip to Llandudno
On Monday, 15th of July, Year 12 Geography students enjoyed a great day in Llandudno with Mr Storey, studying beach materials for their NEA coursework. They collected valuable data while experiencing real coastal features first-hand.
|
|
The trip also included a visit to see the Alice in Wonderland statues, which the town uses as part of its rebranding strategy to attract more visitors. With beautiful summer weather, the students had fun and gained important knowledge to support their A-level studies.

Industry Insight Day: Created By our Year 12 Baltic Research Institute (BRI) students
Last week, our Liverpool Life Sciences and Studio School students joined forces for an incredible industry insight day, created by our Year 12 students.
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), also named The Silent Pandemic, is a huge global problem, but not many young people have heard of the issue or aren't aware of the scale of the problem.

The aim of the day was to engage young people in AMR and raise awareness around using antibiotics correctly and minimising the spread of resistant organisms. Year 10 students were split into pathway-specific groups of Data Analysts, Engineers, Game Designers, Writers, Illustrators, and Primary Outreach.
Students then developed their ideas and pathway-specific challenges and presented their work.

Year 12 Criminology visit to Liverpool Crown Court
On Tuesday, the 15th of July. Sixteen Criminology A-level students witnessed a variety of the most severe legal cases, chiefly murder & serious assault. Students saw Imran Khan KC and human rights lawyer, acting as prosecution barrister in a highly sensitive case, as we sat next to Clare Fallon, Channel 4’s North of England reporter.

Liverpool Venture Crawl
We took a group of Year 12 students, both from business and those interested in starting their own business on a trip around the city to meet a variety of funders, founders and other support organisations. We started at Century Tech to find out what is happening in the knowledge quarter, particularly around life sciences and the incredible amount of investment that is going into this area.

Then we went to the cotton exchange to hear from professional Liverpool about their services as well as the city council and River Capital about how and why they invest into local companies. Then an amazing lunch at the inspiring Yamama to hear about their journey and about Kindred, the organisation in Liverpool providing support and funding to social trading organisations across the region.
|
|
|
Finally, we went to the central library to hear from the business and IP centre and what support is available there and hear from Gary Miller and his entrepreneur drop in sessions every Thursday afternoon for free. We ended the day at the University of Liverpool Brett centre where we had a female founders podcast, listening to the challenges that females in our region have when setting up a business.

William Blake: Exploring his Poetry and Art Workshop
Year 12 students from English and Art enjoyed a workshop led by Alex Broadhead from Liverpool University exploring the connection between the poems of William Blake and his etchings and watercolours. We looked at several poems, including The Angel, The Fly and The Tyger. Students finished the session by making a work in response to one of the poems.

Sellafield Work Experience
Last week, a group of Liverpool Life Sciences and Studio students completed one week of work experience at the British nuclear site license company Sellafield who are also one of our business partners.
|
|
|
Mark Duffy, Engineering and Education Development Manager, shared that our students had been amazing, all were polite, professional, enthusiastic and engaging. The students delivered a presentation to the team at Sellafield which Mark said was a success.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Mark, Sarah Wilford, and Kelly-Marie at Sellafield for providing our students with invaluable experience through this opportunity, which will serve as a powerful foundation for our students' growth, both academically and personally.

Social Enterprise Drop Down Day
All Ignite students were taken off the timetable to work on a problem around a social enterprise. The start of the day was when the brief was given to look at a premise in Liverpool to build a sustainable homeless shelter which can house homeless people at the top, on the middle floor a series of workshops to teach them new skills and retail units on the ground floor to generate revenue to pay for rent and rates and make the overall project sustainable.

The students were amazing and came up with some interesting ideas about where to position a new shelter, how to make it sustainable and which groups of homeless people to target. Empathy was the word of the day, and it was great to see our students focus on other people.

|
Natural History Museum
One of our staff members, Dr. Mitchell spent two days on a training course run by the Natural History Museum and the Institute for Research in Schools at St Pauls School, London. She has been learning how to use the EDS (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) unit, which we will have on loan for six weeks next year.

The EDS works alongside a scanning electron microscope and identifies which atoms the sample contains. We plan to use it in a range of projects including entomology and materials science. Many thanks as always to Alex Ball from the Natural History Museum for making this happen!

Project Based Learning
This week KS4 PBL students have been thinking about power generation by induction. We can generate power if we can make something turn to drive the generator, so pupils have been problem-solving to build windmills and watermills. We thought about designs from the past and present, and students came up with designs which worked well. The overall conclusion was that designs which scooped the wind or water worked best.

STEAM
Students in Ignite STEAM have spent this week’s lessons looking at the history of paint including Ultra Marine, Cochineal, Tyrian Purple and Prussian Blue, and how these paints were used by artists in different eras. They then used what they had learnt to make their own paints exploring the use of solvents and binders. They finished up by making Tempera paints, which use egg as an ingredient, and which were used by Botticelli, Raphael, and Michelangelo before the advent of oil paints.

Engineering
- Ignite participated in a Chopsticks Cup competition, with students having to take objects from one bowl and place them into another, with smaller and more difficult to pick up objects being worth more points. The students loved the challenge and gained an insight into some of the different cultural practices and traditions from East Asia.
|
|
- In Ignite STEAM the students finished their design proposals for creating storage boxes, and some were even able to carry out some Static Stress simulations (something which engineers wouldn't usually do till degree level!). The work attached is from Jayden (UTC) and shows his analysis of the simulation results as well as his chess-based design idea.
|
|
- In Year 10 Engineering, students have completed their outdoor lantern CAD models for Task 3 of their coursework. The students were tasked with created a 3D model from some 2D technical drawings, some even going one step further and adding in the candle for visual effect. This is an amazing digital render created by Alp Cam in Studio.

- Year 12 have just finished up their learning objective 1 for their Unit 17 coursework on CAM. For this task they have to do research and create an essay explaining how computer-aided systems have revolutionised modern manufacturing and the different ways in which it benefits the engineering industry, including case studies on advanced manufacturing facilities like Beverston Engineering, based in Knowsley.

Beverston Engineering
Earlier in Year 12, we went on a school trip to Beverston Engineering in Knowsley Business Park. They are a market-leading precision engineering company that specialises in the use of 5-Axis CNC Machines. We were taken on a tour around the factory where they had many manufacturing machines that they use to create parts that are sent to companies such as Rolls Royce Aerospace.
Beverston began to explore the possibility of technology being used to aid their growth in 2017 with a knowledge transfer collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University. This led the company to the opportunity of expanding their production with the aid of computing power, and to develop a digital strategy with the help of Made Smarter.
When we visited the factory, it was immediately clear how intertwined the computers were with their machinery.

More often than not, there were computers connected directly to the manufacturing machine which was used to input code for a design or to automatically adjust the tolerances for example.
If there was not a computer connected directly, there were most likely multiple connections to the server box in the corner of the factory that acts as a massive data centre for all of the company's digital activity. It manages energy usage, transaction quantity and any issues with faulty equipment or products, among many others.
As a result of this trend towards a more digital production process, Beverston has increased machine availability by 17% across the entire company, reduced quality planning and reporting times by a massive 72%, carbon emissions decreased by 10% and still increased profitability while dealing with the economic shocks of the pandemic and the Ukraine War.

Sandcastles in Science
KS4 students have been investigating the material science of sandcastles, thinking hard about what holds the sand together and learning about polar forces, hydrogen bonding, surface tension, adhesion and cohesion. We also learnt about why sea glass is dull when dry and shiny when wet, considering concepts around coherent and diffuse reflection from surfaces. We then tested out the theory with some sandcastles!
