The Future is Bright: Witnessing Innovation and Young Talent in Birmingham
The adage, "When you witness young talent and world-class innovation in the same room, you know the future is bright," was powerfully proven true during a recent visit to the Autodesk Technology Centre in Birmingham. This experience was a fantastic example of innovation and education coming together for T-Level students.
Alison Whittle, Technical Adviser Education and Progression at City & Guilds alongside colleague Robert Pouton, Engineering Technical Advisor, spent an insightful day at the centre. The visit highlighted how technology is transforming the way students learn and create, featuring an outstanding demonstration of Fusion Software for 3D product design and an engaging robotics workshop.

Inspiration in Action: Showcasing Future Engineers
The undisputed highlight of the day was the inspiring presentation delivered by two remarkable T-Level students from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC, Torin and Henrique.
At just seventeen, these two students showcased exceptional engineering knowledge, confidence, and professionalism. Both aspire to pursue higher or degree-level apprenticeships in Engineering, and based on their performance, any engineering company would be fortunate to welcome them. They truly represent the next generation of innovators!
Alison Whittle, Technical Advisor Education and Progression at City & Guides, shared, "They showcased exceptional engineering knowledge, confidence, and professionalism. Both aspire to progress onto higher or degree-level apprenticeships in Engineering, and based on what I saw, any engineering company would be fortunate to have them."

Facial Reconstruction Masterclass
On Tuesday we were privileged to welcome Mr Tim Blackburn. Tim is an NHS Consultant in the Department of Maxillo- Facial and Facial Plastic Surgery at Manchester Royal Infirmary, where he served as Clinical Director from 2013-2017.
Tim talked about reconstructive surgery after cancer treatment, and his masterclass included clinical histories of several patients. Tim uses computer analysis and modelling in his work, so his talk was of interest to computer scientists as well as those wishing to enter medicine and allied careers in healthcare.
There was also a strong general interest aspect in this remarkable surgery. The cinema was full to the brim with students from Ignite to Year 13, including students from North Liverpool Academy. The amazing success of Tim's team made for a very interesting talk, including a fascinating insight into how they select clinical strategies dependent on patients' desired outcomes.
There were lots of questions and answers after the masterclass, and Tim kindly stayed on and spoke individually to many members of the audience. Tim was very impressed by Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio School, and by the quality of questioning, and we hope to continue this new partnership.

Ignite Scholars Unilever Trip
On Thursday, ten of our Ignite Scholar students went to the Unilever R&D site. This is the trip that allows us to participate in the Unilever Inspire programme and challenge. While we couldn’t take all the scholars from the competition's class, the students we were able to take have taken notes to share information once they return to school and support the rest of the class in their entries.
Throughout the day, students took part in six workshops that covered the six areas of product development. These are: Total product design, Consumer technical insight, Packaging, Formulation, Digital & Processing. These all had experts explaining all the things that the students need to consider for making their product concept design. These sessions were very informative and allowed the students to ask the Unilever experts any other questions they may have regarding their ideas for the challenge.
It was a wonderful day and the students were fantastic. They remained engaged throughout all the sessions and considered all areas of their product ideas.

Brilliant Festival: T-Level Engineering
Our T-Level students had the amazing opportunity to attend the BRILLIANT festival as exhibitors.
Representing the school, they participated in a live demo of CAD slam – a 5-minute CAD challenge where they all competed to design an object, and they answered questions from attendees.
There were lots of industry partners there and students showcased their work from their employer-set projects, and shared insight into their hands-on modelling work using 3D printers, CNC machines and laser cutters at school.

Angler Fish Puppets in STEAM
Ignite STEAM are concluding a short project on Angler fish. These amazing denizens of the deep hunt their prey by hanging a bioluminescent lure in front of their mouth.
Unsuspecting prey fish are attracted to the light in the darkness of the deep sea and are swallowed up in the angler fish’s enormous mouth. Angler fish also have a unique mating cycle. Once a male angler fish finds a female in the vast icy depths of the ocean, he attaches to her side, eventually becoming joined forever to the female’s body to provide a lifelong supply of sperm. Students made puppets to explain and demonstrate what they had learnt, using skills such as 3D model building, stitching, free thought and interpretation.

New Park Primary School Microscope Session
On Tuesday, we had another visit from one of our primary schools in the trust. One of the classes from New Park Primary School came to take part in our microscope workshops.
Here we got students to not only engage in our science facilities and note down their observations of their samples. But we also wanted the students to work on their writing skills, so after doing descriptive writing of their observations, they were then encouraged to use their imaginations.
The following task was to write creatively. They had to look at their samples and come up with a short story based on what they saw. For example, they could look at reptile skin samples and then develop a story about the desert as the peaks of the skin look like large sand dunes. This was a lovely session and the students worked exceptionally. We look forward to meeting the second class later this year.

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students should not contact home themselves when they are unwell; staff will call parents if needed.
