Year 13 Student Connie Impresses Academics at LJMU
Year 13 Engineering student, Connie, recently delivered a live engineering demonstration at Liverpool John Moores University showcasing how students at Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio School use generative design in Autodesk Fusion 360 to create stronger, more efficient designs, impressing academics and industry professionals alike.
Connie presented her own phone stand design, explaining both the design process and the underlying technology.
Dr. Princy Johnson, Reader in Sensors and Data at Liverpool John Moores University shared, “What a showcase of talents. Connie proved to be the star of the live demo session. The participants thought hers was one of the best presentations of the day. Great to see that Liverpool Life Sciences UTC students are gaining the necessary life skills in addition to the technological skills.”
This is not the first time Connie has demonstrated excellence on a national stage. In 2022, she won the UK Young Scientist of the Year Award for her project work on Adaptive Variation across avian species.
We are incredibly proud of Connie’s achievements, and we look forward to seeing her continue to thrive as she progresses into the next stage of her education and career.

Owl Pellets: First Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Session
We kicked off the SEM season with a session for Year 10 Scholars and BRI students. They dissected owl pellets to extract the bones of the owl’s dinner, and then we put the recovered samples in the SEM.
Shown is the lower jaw of a mouse or shrew, the incisor is coming out of the socket in the bone. This year we have EDX capability, which means we can identify the chemical make-up of samples in the electron beam. On the right of the picture you can see two spectra from the tooth, one from the main tooth and one from the area showing paler on the SEM.
The paler area has Fe (iron) in it, whereas the main tooth does not. We are hoping these are very early results supporting the idea that the teeth of rodents contain metals (in addition to calcium). It's very early days, but we had a lovely session after school, and it was so nice to end it with what looked like it could be a preliminary positive result.

Baltic Research Institution Journal: Latest Edition
Our exceptional new team of Year 12 students running the Baltic Research Institute (BRI) worked tirelessly to publish the latest edition of the BRI research journal before the end of the year.
In this edition you can read original research, investigations and literature reviews about the golden ratio and the relationship between maths and art, the problem of endometriosis, the impact of telemedicine and the potential of nanospheres to improve the sustainability of concrete.
If that's not enough, we also have an article about the AI bubble from our new physics and tech editor Anthony, a wordsearch and much much more! Remember all of this research is conducted and edited by school students, imagine what they can achieve in the future!

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students should not contact home themselves when they are unwell; staff will call parents if needed.
