It's been an impactful first week back after half-term for Liverpool Life Sciences UTC. From hosting our fifth consecutive Scanning Electron Microscope programme, giving pupils hands-on experience with university-level research equipment, to welcoming leading entrepreneur Sir Peter Rigby for a student-led podcast, opportunities have continued to inspire learners across all key stages. Our Engineering students strengthened industry links through a visit to Rösler UK, we celebrated alumni success at Alfred H Knight, and delivered engaging primary outreach through a hands-on science workshop.

Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Round-up

Between January and February 2026, Liverpool Life Sciences UTC led its fifth consecutive year with the SEM, creating high-impact scientific opportunities for pupils and students across the Northern Schools Trust, from primary school through to sixth form.

{item_alt_tag}

Through careful planning, student leadership and strong partnerships, the SEM programme enabled learners from across the Trust to engage with University-level equipment, develop scientific confidence and experience what real research looks like in practice. The equipment was loaned to Liverpool Life Sciences UTC for the fifth year by partners Hitachi, The Institute for Research in Schools, the Royal Microscopical Society, and the Natural History Museum.

Alumni Student Excels at Alfred H Knight

Alumni student Kira, was celebrated for Women and Girls in Science, by business partner Alfred H Knight. Kira is a Group ICP Apprentice who graduated from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC in August 2025. AHK said her "curiosity and determination are already shaping her path in the industry."

Rather than following a traditional university pathway, Kira works directly within their Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) department. This expert team specialises in highly precise chemical composition analysis of materials. It’s a dynamic, technical setting where apprentices build hands-on experience while continuing their academic learning.

Science Teeth Workshop

On Tuesday, a Year 4 class from Roscoe Primary had a primary outreach session with Miss Linkman from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC. In their curriculum science lessons, they have been learning about teeth and completing an investigation on the effect of different drinks on eggshell, this is used to simulate enamel on teeth. They discussed their previous learning and what they already knew about taking care of their teeth.

{item_alt_tag}

The activity Miss Linkman led was an investigation into the best way to brush teeth. This was completed by using a simulation gel that glows under UV light. The students completed two tests; test one was testing the different effects of manual and electric toothbrushes over the same time period. Test two was all groups using manual toothbrushes for different times. The students were wonderful at thinking scientifically and making predictions based on what they already knew.

Sickness procedure

From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students should not contact home themselves when they are unwell; staff will call parents if needed.
