This week has been full of exciting opportunities for our students. Three teams of Ignite students prepared for the Unilever Competition Final, refining their product prototypes and presentations ahead of the Celebration and Assessment Day. Students also visited the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine for an International Women’s Day event, while two T-Level students gained industry insight at Skyhook Games. Creative talents are on display in the Dot-art Schools Competition, and Ignite STEAM students developed teamwork and resilience while building life-size leafcutter ant models.

High-Tech Water Fountains and Reusable Bottles
In school, we have new high-tech water fountains for students to fill their bottles. Students are advised to bring a reusable bottle into school each day if they wish to use this facility. Staying hydrated throughout the day is important for concentration and wellbeing, and using a reusable bottle helps reduce plastic waste.

Unilever Practical Day: Preparing for Unilever Competition Final
Three groups of our Ignite students from both Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio, who we share our school building with, have been invited to bring their product concepts to the Celebration and Assessment Day on Friday 13th March.
On Thursday, in preparation for this, the three groups are completed a practical and practice day. The photos captured, show students working on the formulation of a prototype of their product. Once they have worked on their formulations, they are going to be further developing their presentations and practising to make sure that they all know the different areas of the project and ensuring they can keep to the time constraints. We are very excited for the final next week and wish the students the best of luck.

Ignite STEAM
Students were set a challenge at the end of a topic on leaf cutter ants; working together to produce a parade of ants from plasticine. The ants needed to be as close to life-size and as anatomically perfect as possible.
The students tackled the challenge with focus and determination. The first attempt was more like spiders, but we problem-solved to realise that this was because of the thin mid-section ("spines" is actually the correct item in these ants) of the ants and their posture, which showed the importance of seeing what is actually there, rather than making assumptions.
As the lesson progressed, manual dexterity improved by leaps and bounds, ingenuity and problem-solving skills came to the fore as pencils, rulers, lanyards and other items were pressed into service as tools. Students began to work cooperatively, especially passing on tips and helping with antennae and legs, which were especially tricky.
The importance of resilience was highlighted as students and staff overcame their frustrations and tried again. Phoenix made a tiny ant, which was recognisable as such. Dr Mitchell said the interesting thing was how quickly the students' skills improved, and by the end of the lesson there was a line of marching leaf cutter ants to be proud of.

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students should not contact home themselves when they are unwell; staff will call parents if needed.
