Alfred H Knight Practical Skills Assessment: Work Experience Winners
Last week, two staff members from Alfred H Knight, a global company with labs in Prescot that use a range of analytical chemistry techniques to test and inspect materials, visited Liverpool Life Sciences UTC.
They joined us so that they could assess some of our Year 12 students that were completing a practical skills assessment after completing a Lab Metalytics project. The students excelled in a range of important laboratory techniques, including making a standard solution, creating dilutions, producing a calibration curve and using it to determine the concentration of two unknown solutions. This was an open book activity, and the students could restart if needed.
Our students showed outstanding practical skills and were also extremely resilient. Initially, the prize was going to be a week's work experience at Alfred H Knight for the best two students who completed the activity. However, due to the students' exceptional work, a third place was offered.
The students selected were Darcy, Delight and Elisheba. They were methodical throughout the process and not afraid to start again if something wasn’t quite right. They showed real determination throughout the process as they strived to be as precise and accurate in their actions as possible.

Congratulations to all the participating students. Dr John Dyer, Project Based Learning and Innovation Lead at Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio School shared, "All students were wonderful, and we were very impressed with the technical and transferable skills they demonstrated."

Success at The Business of Science Innovation Awards
Pupils from across Northern Schools Trust (NST) enjoyed an unforgettable day at the University of Nottingham as they showcased their innovative ideas at the Business of Science Innovation Awards.
The exciting opportunity came following the NST Science Competition held in March at Liverpool Life Sciences UTC, where pupils from Reception through to Year 10 developed creative projects designed to tackle real-world challenges. Shortlisted entries were then invited to the Business of Science Conference last Thursday, giving students the chance to present their ideas on a bigger stage.
We are incredibly proud to announce that NST schools won in both categories, with two outstanding projects each winning £1,000 for their schools.
The Secondary School category was sponsored by University of Nottingham. The winning project was Safe Skin from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC, created by Year 10 student Natasha. The Safe Skin project was praised for addressing an important issue with sensitivity, compassion and a strong focus on supporting young people’s wellbeing.
Other shortlisted NST entries included an app that recycles old technology devices and smart glasses featuring an AI speaker to support people with visual impairment and hearing difficulties.
Many congratulations to Natasha on this fantastic achievement.

Bionow Biopharma Manufacturing Conference
On Thursday, students attended the Bionow conference at the Hilton Hotel Liverpool, which brought together experts to explore how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are transforming the way medicines are made.
The event highlighted how digital tools and automation can make production faster, more efficient, and more reliable, while also focusing on the skills needed for the future workforce.
Bev and Dr John Dyer, two of our teaching staff, attended alongside our students who are involved in the Bionow mentoring programme. We had the opportunity to hear fascinating presentations and panel discussions, network with science businesses and academics, and even pick up plenty of freebies from the exhibition stands! Overall, the conference demonstrated how innovation and people development are key to delivering better treatments to patients.

Baltic Research Institute (BRI) Journal: Inequalities of the Health System
At Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio School we are committed to providing our students with unparalleled opportunities to engage in real-world scientific research. The Baltic Research Institute (BRI) Journal, the only student-led scientific journal of its kind, is a testament to the ambition, talent, and academic excellence of our students.
Through this initiative, students conduct rigorous research across a range of scientific disciplines, developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that prepare them for future careers in STEM.
We invite you to explore our students' latest edition, diving deeper into inequalities of the health system, exploring how issues such as gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic status impact upon health outcomes. Articles explore how age, gender and socio-economic background can influence both awareness and access to healthcare services.
Students also examine the barriers homeless individuals can face when accessing treatment, while other research investigates how ethnicity can contribute to disparities in patient care and experiences of medical negligence. The journal also reflects on the changing perception of tuberculosis, exploring how stigma has historically shaped attitudes towards the disease.
Dr John Dyer, Project Based Learning and Innovation Lead at Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio School shared, "We have been particularly impressed by the autonomy and work ethic of this group of BRI students, and they have really taken responsibility for the design and focus of the journal."
A huge congratulations to the editorial team for producing another exceptional edition.

Sickness Procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students should not contact home themselves when they are unwell; staff will call parents/guardians if needed.
Personal Electronic Devices Policy Reminder
All personal electronic devices, including mobile phones, are not permitted to be used during the school day. We expect all devices to be switched off and kept out of sight during lessons unless the pupil is using the device as part of a lesson with the permission of their class teacher.
Mobile phones will be confiscated if they are seen, heard or used during the school day unless a pupil has been given permission. The headteacher will determine the length of time they deem proportionate for confiscation.
