History came to life for Ignite students during a moving visit from Harry Kessler. He shared his family’s incredible escape from Nazi-occupied Austria, which was made possible by an extraordinary act of British kindness. We also bid a celebratory farewell to our fantastic Year 11 and Year 13 leavers. Meanwhile, last week our geographers took to sunny Formby Beach to master their fieldwork skills.

Supporting Lemmy’s World Scout Jamboree Fundraising
Huge congratulations to our student, Lemmy, who has been selected for the Merseyside contingent at the 2027 World Scout Jamboree.
To help fund this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and support Scouts from less fortunate countries to attend, Lemmy is actively fundraising. On Sunday 7th June, he completed the 20km Wirral Coastal Walk from New Brighton to Thurstaston.
Lemmy would be extremely grateful for any sponsorship or support you are able to give. Donations can be made here. Thank you for supporting Lemmy with this fantastic achievement and opportunity.

History Brought to Life: Ignite Welcome Guest Speaker Harry Kessler
On Tuesday, Ignite had the fantastic opportunity to meet Harry Kessler and listen to the story of how his family were forced to flee their home after the Nazis occupied Austria. Harry told students how his grandmother was imprisoned in Theresienstadt concentration camp but miraculously survived.
|
|
|
Harry’s own story involves an extraordinary act of kindness. His family were able to come to England to live and escape the Nazis because, a few years earlier, his father had helped a lost British couple visiting Austria. They had kept in touch, and the British family sponsored Harry’s family to escape to England. A group of students were then able to have lunch with Harry and his wife, Mary, and share more stories about their lives.
If students would like to borrow a copy of Harry's daughter's books to read, please speak to Ms Bonnesen.

Fieldwork Focus: Formby Beach Geography Trip
Last week, students enjoyed a fantastic geography field trip to Formby with Mr. Storey and Ms. Grattage. In glorious sunshine, students investigated whether psammosere primary succession is taking place at Formby Beach. Working in groups, they collected data on vegetation height, biodiversity, dune shape and height, and soil characteristics across the dune system. The students were hardworking, motivated, and enthusiastic throughout the day, showing excellent fieldwork skills and teamwork.
|
|
|
The evidence gathered will help students answer their enquiry questions and deepen the understanding of coastal environments and succession. This will give students an excellent starting point for their own A-level NEA research projects which will be starting soon. It was an enjoyable and successful day for everyone.

Keeping Cool in the Warm Weather
This week, during the warm weather, our students enjoyed a lolly ice during their lunch break to help beat the heat. The blessing of being in a 200-year-old building is that it remains relatively cool.

Sickness Procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students should not contact home themselves when they are unwell; staff will call parents/guardians if needed.
Personal Electronic Devices Policy Reminder
All personal electronic devices, including mobile phones, are not permitted to be used during the school day. We expect all devices to be switched off and kept out of sight during lessons unless the pupil is using the device as part of a lesson with the permission of their class teacher.
Mobile phones will be confiscated if they are seen, heard or used during the school day unless a pupil has been given permission. The headteacher will determine the length of time they deem proportionate for confiscation.
