Uniform Reminder

In preparation for the return to school in September, please check that your student’s uniform or sixth form clothing meets the required dress code. A reminder that shoes must be school shoes, not black trainers or boots. Your child's ID card and lanyard carries over into the next academic year. For safeguarding reasons, their face must be fully visible on their card. If it has faded, a new one can be purchased from student services.

We have a brilliant range of second-hand uniform available for parents to purchase or borrow in the building. If you have any doubts that the items you are purchasing ahead of September meet the dress codes, please do keep the receipts and tags and check with us before the items are worn and can no longer be exchanged.

A reminder for students who intend to explore their creativity this summer with alternative hair colours and piercings.  Hair must be returned to a colour within the natural colour range before the return to school. Facial piercings are not permitted in school, so please do allow sufficient time to heal and ensure blanks are fitted before the return to school in September.

We have a team of staff on call over the summer break. If you have any concerns over the summer, please call reception in the first instance, who will ensure you are contacted by the appropriate member of staff.

Lemmy would be extremely grateful for any sponsorship or support you are able to give. Donations can be made here. Thank you for supporting Lemmy with this fantastic achievement and opportunity.

Industry Insight Day: The Iterative Design Challenge

On Tuesday, students engaged in a challenge about iterative design.  We asked them to think, research, and design a car using some basic materials and really think about how the car would move, incorporating some key physics elements into the day. There was a twist where students were given a limited budget and had to work out what to buy, which led to some interesting maths.

The day started with an overview of the problem, and then it was up to the students to come up with their best designs. At the end of the school day, all the students tried to race the cars in the sports hall.

Some of the designs were amazing technically, although bonus points were for Bullet Bill (from Mario), a Red Bull van with a Red Bull can on the roof and a New York Taxi with Robert De Niro in the window.

Stepping Into the Future at Cambridge

On Wednesday, prospective applicants to the University of Cambridge coped admirably with the hot weather. After clocking up 20,000 steps visiting the University Library and various colleges, they spent time learning about university life from current students. Over the two days, they toured several colleges to help them decide where to apply, while also attending subject talks and taster lectures.

Studying the Sand Dune Ecosystem

On Wednesday, A-Level Biology students visited Ainsdale Beach for field work purposes. They investigated how living organisms are adapted to different habitats and how environmental factors influence the distribution of species. Students collected data using ecological sampling techniques such as quadrats and transects, measured abiotic factors, and analysed patterns across the sand dune ecosystem.

Ignite STEAM: The Science of Art

Students have been exploring the history of paint manufacture. On Wednesday, they experimented with malachite, binders, and solvents to see how the different components affect how the paint performs. They also made Tempera paint, which contains egg yolk as a binder. Tempera paint was used widely in the renascence period by artists such as Michelangelo.

Ignite student Shiraz made the observation that the tempera paint behaved like watercolour. Artists do use tempera when they want the appearance of watercolour with a durable finish, so well done Shiraz for this perceptive observation.

Sickness Procedure

From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students should not contact home themselves when they are unwell; staff will call parents/guardians if needed.

Personal Electronic Devices Policy Reminder

All personal electronic devices, including mobile phones, are not permitted to be used during the school day. We expect all devices to be switched off and kept out of sight during lessons unless the pupil is using the device as part of a lesson with the permission of their class teacher.

Mobile phones will be confiscated if they are seen, heard or used during the school day unless a pupil has been given permission. The headteacher will determine the length of time they deem proportionate for confiscation.
