Inspiring Futures at The International Microscopy Congress
In an inspiring start to the term, students from Year 12 and 13 attended The 21st International Microscopy Congress (IMC21). We were the only school represented at this prestigious event and had a stand showcasing projects and outreach from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio School on the Hitachi/IRIS/RMS scanning electron microscope.
The students who attended have previously worked on SEM projects and represented the many students across both schools who have enjoyed this privilege. Students enjoyed looking at posters from researchers around the world and visiting exhibitor stands demonstrating the very latest in electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.
Students and staff met up with Liverpool University and The Royal Microscopical Society and touched base with staff on the Hitachi stand. The students began to network and form relationships with academics and microscopy professionals, building networks to support their learning and future careers.

Sixth Formers Explore Health and Life Science Careers at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
Year 12 students from the Life Science and MeDeVet pathways visited Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) to find out about some of the exciting careers, research and facilities on offer.
They started with a fascinating intro to LSTM including a talk about the history of the company and the opportunity to explore some amazing items from the archive, including early microscopes, a hand-drawn sketch of an anopheles mosquito by entomologist Alwen Evans and some preserved insect samples.
Students then moved over to the incredible Immersive Suite for a virtual consultation activity where students had to diagnose patients in Malawi based upon information gained during consultations, their symptoms and diagnostic test results.
Afterwards, they headed to the iiTECH labs and heard from the researchers about how they are using technology to develop innovative products such as handheld devices that can detect insecticide levels on walls to determine how well protected homes are from mosquito disease vectors.
Students also visited the LITE labs, and had the opportunity to carry out four different assays on live mosquitos to determine how susceptible they are to insecticides.
The day concluded with a wide range of fascinating career talks from five different researchers and technicians at LSTM where students really gained an appreciation of the different areas of research and opportunities at the company.
What a fantastic start to Year 12 for our students, who were very impressed by their experience at LSTM and had plenty of questions throughout the day.

Ignite Paper Plane Workshop
Ignite students got an exciting introduction to Project Based Learning in an afternoon workshop looking at the design and manufacture of paper planes. Students learnt about the forces on planes in flight, how an aerofoil wing gives lift and about the principle of iterative design. They also designed logos for their planes.
The planes competed for the longest flight, and the best plane almost managed the journey from one refectory to the other! The students were then introduced to “Future Flight”, an Institute for Research in Schools computer simulation project around hydrogen-powered planes which the students will have an opportunity to participate in during their time in school.

Sickness Procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students should not contact home themselves when they are unwell; staff will call parents/guardians if needed.
Personal Electronic Devices Policy Reminder
All personal electronic devices, including mobile phones, are not permitted to be used during the school day. We expect all devices to be switched off and kept out of sight during lessons unless the pupil is using the device as part of a lesson with the permission of their class teacher.
Mobile phones will be confiscated if they are seen, heard or used during the school day unless a pupil has been given permission. The headteacher will determine the length of time they deem proportionate for confiscation.
Zero Tolerance of Abuse
Northern Schools Trust has a zero-tolerance approach to abusive language, violence, aggression or harassment towards employees, governors and volunteers.
Vaping
We would like to remind you that we do not allow students to bring items such as cigarettes, lighters, matches or e-cigarettes/ vapes into school.
