Over the past two weeks, our students have been actively exploring new ideas and developing essential skills across every discipline. Sixth Formers led thought-provoking discussions on the role of technology at the AI x Tech for Good in Education event, while Health & Social Care students began investigating how AI is transforming the NHS. In the creative arts, Years 12 and 13 honed their observational techniques during live life drawing sessions to build competitive university portfolios. Outside the classroom, GCSE Geography students conducted urban research and interviewed international visitors at the Albert Dock, and our science labs illuminated as students tested our new fluorescence microscope on bio-fluorescing fungi.

School Early Closure

On Thursday 8th and Thursday 15th October, school will be closing at an earlier time of 3:00 pm. This is due to our external open evenings for prospective new students who are looking to join our schools.

Year 11 English Revision

Revision for Year 11 takes place every Monday from 4:00 to 4.30 pm. We encourage all Year 11 students to attend. These sessions will run till the start of GCSEs in May.

During the session we will focus on a specific aspect of the course; the students can then show us the work that we have done to continue with their own independent revision during the week.

We look forward to seeing as many of Year 11 in these sessions as possible.

Future-Focused: Sixth Formers Lead the AI x Tech for Good Conversation

Last week, Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio hosted professionals across education, technology and digital sectors for the AI x Tech for Good in Education event, with our Sixth Form students helping to shape the conversation.

Our students shared their experiences, challenged ideas and explored how AI is already influencing learning, creativity and future careers.

Essential Portfolio Skills: Years 12 & 13 Life Drawing Session

Students in Year 13 and 12 participated in a double session of life drawing with both male and female models. Year 12 will have regular life drawing sessions during Project Based Learning (PBL) with live models to help develop their skills in understanding anatomy, form, proportion, and to hone their observational skills. These are essential practises to help them round out their portfolios for university or creative careers.

Geography Fieldwork Success

Two groups of Geography students took part in their GCSE fieldwork in Liverpool city centre and the Albert Dock with Mr Storey. Despite it being British weather, the students were fortunate to enjoy lovely sunshine!

Students investigated how the urban environment changes from the inner city towards the Central Business District. They collected a range of geographical data, including pedestrian and traffic counts and Environmental Quality Index (EQI) scores, allowing them to compare different areas of the city.

At the Albert Dock, students also interviewed tourists about their visit to Liverpool. They showed great confidence when approaching members of the public from around the world, including China, Japan, America, India and countries across Europe.

The students were exceptionally well-behaved throughout the afternoon and were a real credit to the school. Their enthusiasm, confidence and professionalism made the fieldwork a great success.

Testing Our New Fluorescence Microscope

There were gasps of amazement in the innovation labs when the lights were turned off and some mushrooms were illuminated using UV light at 365 nm and glowed an ethereal green.

We also had some green moss which turned red under the UV. These mushrooms had been collected in North Wales on a foraging trip led by David Winnard of Discover the Wild, who has kindly agreed to help our students with a forthcoming project on Fungi.

These fluorescent samples were the first samples we viewed with our fluorescence microscope. Students were able to observe the fungi at x400 with UV illumination, and make some initial judgements as to whether it was the spores or the gills which are fluorescing.

Bio-fluorescence in Fungi is a relatively new field of study, it was only in 2015 that it was discovered by Ksenia Purtov, Ilia Yampolsky et al. that the fluorescence was due to Luciferin, the same group of compounds which are responsible for light emission in fireflies and other species, although each species has evolved a specific luciferin luciferase pair, so the compound is not quite the same.

Year 12 Health & Social Care Project Based Learning

Mr Phillips, Quality Nominee and Leader of Games Development, kicked off a new project for Health and Social Care students in Project Based Learning. Students are learning about the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the NHS, and therefore on the jobs which these young people will be applying for in the near future.

The pace of AI-driven change is rapid, and we want to make sure our students are ahead of the field in the jobs market by understanding the impact and uses of AI in the present and the future.

We want them to be creators not consumers of healthcare advances using AI, so students are going to spend the next few weeks considering how AI and the NHS will interact in the future, and how AI might solve some of our healthcare problems.

The students' work will then be entered into an internal competition to be judged by Mr Phillips and one of our medical partners. The best ideas will also be entered into Teen Tech or Business of Science competitions as appropriate.

Sickness Procedure

From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students should not contact home themselves when they are unwell; staff will call parents/guardians if needed.

Personal Electronic Devices Policy Reminder

All personal electronic devices, including mobile phones, are not permitted to be used during the school day. We expect all devices to be switched off and kept out of sight during lessons unless the pupil is using the device as part of a lesson with the permission of their class teacher.

Mobile phones will be confiscated if they are seen, heard or used during the school day unless a pupil has been given permission. The headteacher will determine the length of time they deem proportionate for confiscation.

Zero Tolerance of Abuse

Northern Schools Trust has a zero-tolerance approach to abusive language, violence, aggression or harassment towards employees, governors and volunteers.

Vaping

We would like to remind you that we do not allow students to bring items such as cigarettes, lighters, matches or e-cigarettes/ vapes into school.
