From exploring the Royal Navy’s largest aircraft carrier to coding robots and dissecting hearts, our students have had an incredible week of learning and discovery. Highlights include a trip to the University of Liverpool for a prize-winning creative writing ceremony, hands-on experiences in STEM at Unilever and Liverpool University, and practical workshops in emergency medicine and sociology research. As we prepare for the festive season, the school is also buzzing with Christmas spirit, with students getting stuck in to supporting our Christmas appeal and celebrating the end of a fantastic term. There is still time to make a donation so please do help if you are able to.

HMS Prince of Wales Trip
We had the pleasure of taking students in Year 12 and 13 on a trip to the Royal Navy's largest aircraft carrier, the Prince of Wales, which is docked in Liverpool for the week. The students were treated to an extensive tour of the facilities which included the hangar, flight deck, control towers and operations room before focussing on the medical ward and dentistry suite. Many of our students who went on the trip are considering careers in medicine or dentistry, or are considering opportunities in the armed services. This was a fantastic opportunity to find out more about the range of careers and training available in the Navy as well as an awe-inspiring experience just being aboard such a huge ship. It was also great to get such amazing views of Liverpool's iconic waterfront and skyline from the flight deck. We even got to sit in the captain’s chair, but don't tell the captain!

University of Liverpool Literary Festival
On Monday 2nd of December, a group of year 10 students visited the University of Liverpool for a prize-giving ceremony and taster day. This visit followed the success of two of our students, Remy and Alp, who won the University’s Literary Festival Creative Writing Competition, which they entered back in summer. Their prize was a trip to the university for themselves and their classmates to get a taste of university life, a tour of the campus and a sample lecture. Remy and Alp were also presented with their individual prizes. Congratulations to you both! What an achievement.

Year 11 Sociology
Francesca and Raanija have been enthused while learning about crime and ethnicity, and have independently completed primary research to build on their understanding. The girls completed questionnaires and interviews in school to investigate ethnic school subcultures and then linked this with crime statistics across Merseyside to establish patterns and trends. Using their primary and secondary research, they presented their findings back to the class. Great example set by our future Social Scientists!

Unilever staff introduced the product development process, focusing on sustainability, and launched a competition to create a personal or home care product. Students learned about formulation, AI, advertising, packaging, and more through engaging demonstrations. It was an inspiring day, showcasing science in action and offering insights from professionals at a global company. Now, the hard work begins as students develop their solutions!

Bleed Workshop
Year 12 Health and Social Science PBL students took part in a major bleed workshop led by Joe, a former pupil and staff member who now trains people in emergency medicine. He was assisted by Elliott, a Year 13 student who is already working as a first responder/ emergency care assistant at the weekends! Students learnt how to pack a wound to stop bleeding, and how to apply a tourniquet. This workshop leaves them much more capable of using the emergency knife wound kits which are situated around the city, and which can save a life if used correctly.

Prohibiting the use of mobile phones during the school day from the 1st of January 2025
Whilst phones have brought many positives to our lives, it is now timely for me to recognise that children's use of digital technology is having a negative impact on students’ concentration, behaviour, safety, and well-being. We recently received guidance from the Department for Education stating that schools should prohibit the use of mobile phones throughout the school day.
|
|
As a school, we are in agreement with the Department for Education and are planning to implement the change. Mobile phones are a vital part of life and learning, but we are seeing that a greater number of students are becoming addicted to their phones. Their use within the school day has created additional problems for both our children and the school.
- Mobile phones provide an unnecessary distraction, disruption, and diversion within the school day. One national survey stated that one in three secondary school pupils report that mobile phones are used in most lessons without permission.
- Safeguarding is always our main priority. By removing phones, we believe that this will have a positive influence on all students, making the community a safer place. In recent times, for some students, there has been a significant decline in their wellbeing and mental health. Nationally, three in ten students cite making and maintaining friendships and their mental health as a cause of worry, anxiety, or depression. By removing mobile phones, students can spend more time staying active and socialising face to face with their peers, activities which have a positive impact on wellbeing.

Seasonal Lectures
Year 12 enjoyed an afternoon of Seasonal lectures at the Department of Biosciences, Liverpool University. The lectures covered Fluorescent imaging, using phage to treat bacterial infection and the evolution of skeletons. Some of our year 12s volunteered to take part in a demonstration of phage binding specificity. The same equipment is being used to describe the power of phage-based medicine to members of parliament next week!

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

Uniform and equipment reminder
I would like to remind parents of the uniform standards with regard to girl’s trousers. A small number of students are wearing fashion trousers – made of Lycra material and flared leggings in style. The expectation is for students to wear school trousers or a pleated skirt. As the weather is getting colder please ensure your child has a warm, waterproof coat. All students are required to have a school bag with them every day. This must be large enough to carry a number of A4 revision guides. We will provide your child with a suitable bag if they are unable to obtain one.
Jill Davies, Principal at Life Sciences and The Studio School.
