As the new school year kicks off, there’s much to celebrate at Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio School. Ben gained valuable experience during his work placement at VINCI Building, while Year 11 students dove into biology experiments and explored Liverpool on their Geography trip. Year 12 Applied Scientists impressed University of Liverpool researchers on World Cancer Research Day with their lab skills. We were also excited to introduce the NHS Cadets Scheme to our Healthcare students. Don’t miss our upcoming Open Evening and TLevel Launch as we look ahead to a great year!

Work Experience at Vinci Building
In the last week of the summer term, Ben a Year 13 student at Liverpool Life Sciences UTC participated in 5 days of work experience at the construction company VINCI Building. During his time there, Ben was actively involved across multiple disciplines and worked alongside multiple members of the team, all of whom said he was very keen and engaged and was punctual all week. Ben expressed that he “Learned day to day activities of Quantity Surveyors, Civil Engineers, Construction Managers and Labourers, and gained experience working with high tech, precise surveying equipment and detailed models and architectural drawings”.

When asked what actions Ben had undertaken he responded “I shadowed Civil Engineers, watching them and helping them to carry out precise measurements for the positions of a guide wall. I shadowed Construction Managers whilst they were pouring concrete to make the foundations of the Radcliffe Leisure Centre and shadowed quantity surveyors and architects and used their 3D modelling software to explore the finished building”. Ben noted that the aspects that he enjoyed the most were the Civil Engineering and high-tech equipment and 3D modelling that staff at VINCI use. Ben was asked how his time at the VINCI Building prepared him for the jobs of tomorrow, he replied by saying “I have gained valuable experience that can be translated to other job roles and developed new skills with precise surveying equipment and extensive 3D modelling software.”

Wednesday 25th September World Cancer Research Day
This week our Year 12 Applied Scientists marked World Cancer Research Day with a day of practical activities at the University of Liverpool. Researchers from the University led the students in activities such as cytology, training for brain surgery, DNA extraction and data analysis. The researchers were impressed that our students already knew how to use micropipettes and Eppendorf tubes, and commented on the high level of their practical skills. These are skills they have acquired in practical sessions in our University standard innovation laboratories.

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

Year 11 Geography trip to Liverpool City Centre
Last week Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio School students had amazing weather for their Year 11 Geography trip to Liverpool City Centre. The students were conducting their human Geography investigation to survey the quality of the city environment. Students found that from the Graffiti in the skateboard park to the well-kept buildings in Liverpool One a great variety of different urban situations were observed. Afterwards, students visited the Albert Dock to carry out questionnaires for tourists. Some of our students took to it quicker than others – and got over their initial shyness! Our most successful students at asking the most tourists were Josh, Chris and Kaila – all extremely brave and outgoing! Students got some excellent data which will now be plotted on graphs and charts for the Paper 3 Geography exam – from tourists from as far away as New Zealand and Hong Kong. A very successful afternoon’s work.

Uniform and equipment reminder
I would like to remind parents of the uniform standards with regard to girl’s trousers. A small number of students are wearing fashion trousers – made of Lycra material and flared leggings in style. The expectation is for students to wear school trousers or a pleated skirt. As the weather is getting colder please ensure your child has a warm, waterproof coat. All students are required to have a school bag with them every day. This must be large enough to carry a number of A4 revision guides. We will provide your child with a suitable bag if they are unable to obtain one.
Jill Davies, Principal at Life Sciences and The Studio School.
