UCLAN SPARK Event
It was an exciting day for students from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio Liverpool who attended the University of Central Lancashire's SPARK event which was held on the 27th of March. Our students connected with employers offering apprenticeships in Engineering, Digital, Finance, Architecture and more.
The keynote speech by Professor Annette Weekes MBE was inspiring and informative.

|
One of our students Adam shared "I hadn't had much experience with interviews and this was a great way to experience them. The short time between interviews meant we had time to prepare and adapt to our environment. I did two interviews, one with WSP and another with Safran. I think that this event gave me experience that will help in a real interview whilst also giving me opportunities to get degree apprenticeships."
We asked Olivia how it has prepared her for the jobs of tomorrow, she highlighted “I had never attended a short, speed interview until the SPARK event so it was a new experience for me. Because the interviews were only 8 minutes long it helped me develop my interview skills, as I had to get my point across in a short period of time.”
|
|
|
Luca shared “I had an interview with several employers to do with construction such as building and quantity surveying or structural engineering.”
We asked Ewan what he enjoyed the best, and he highlighted “I enjoyed meeting the employers and seeing the campus.” In terms of how it has prepared Ewan for the jobs of tomorrow, he shared, “It has taught me how to handle the pressure in interviews and how to speak to employers.”
We would like to say a huge thank you to UCLAN for giving Adam, Olivia, Luca, Ewan, Ben, James, Mian, and Aaron the opportunity to participate in the event. Their active engagement throughout the experience has been invaluable, allowing them to bring back valuable insights and expertise.

Chicks hatched
Recently, we had eggs incubating in one of the science classrooms for a couple of weeks, and they hatched last week.
Year 11 pupils studying animal care settled them into their new home and pupils across all year groups have enjoyed watching them grow (quickly!) and having the odd cuddle.
The eggs were supplied by ‘Eggucation’ and were from four different breeds of chicken, meaning that students have been able to compare the colours and the features of the different chicks.
The chicks will be collected by the company to go off to a safe, permanent home at the end of next week. We will miss them….and their cheeping!

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

Industry Insight Day
On Wednesday, our Year 10 students participated in an Industry Insight Day, exploring how we can shape Liverpool’s future through well-designed, community-focused housing.
Kenny O’Brien, Director at Alan Johnston Partnership, highlighted how the day focused on:
- What life at AJP looks like—real projects, real risks, real impact.
- The journey that brought him from the classroom to company director.
- And the qualities AJP look for in the next generation: clear thinking, curiosity, collaboration, and a genuine interest in how places are built.
Kenny shared how “Students were tasked with redeveloping real sites across the city, balancing technical, environmental, and social considerations. The brief was impressive—and so were their ideas.” He said, “It’s always a privilege to connect with young people at this stage in their journey. You never quite know where the spark will land, but days like this can make a real difference.”
We would like to thank Kenny for providing this amazing project for our students! Today's Industry Insight Day will give our young engineers an understanding of the different contexts they can work in, and also develop vital collaboration, teamwork and critical thinking skills.

Computer Science Bletchley Park trip
On Monday, Year 10 Computer Science students visited Bletchley Park to discover the incredible achievements of Britain's World War Two Codebreakers, in the place where it happened. Students learnt about the past, present and future of encryption, enjoyed an informative guided tour of the Park, and explored the exhibits including Enigma machines (encodes messages), a replica Bombe (used for decoding messages), Alan Turing's mug and a new exhibit on Artificial Intelligence.

Cambridge University trip
A group of Liverpool Life Sciences and Studio students recently had the incredible opportunity to visit Cambridge University, an experience that proved to be both inspiring and invaluable. This experience left a lasting impression on the students, shaping their ambitions and providing them with valuable insight into what university life could be like.

Uniform and equipment reminder
I would like to remind parents of the uniform standards with regard to girl’s trousers. A small number of students are wearing fashion trousers – made of Lycra material and flared leggings in style. The expectation is for students to wear school trousers or a pleated skirt.
All students are required to have a school bag with them every day. This must be large enough to carry a number of A4 revision guides. We will provide your child with a suitable bag if they are unable to obtain one.
Jill Davies, Principal at Life Sciences and The Studio School.
