At Liverpool Life Sciences UTC, every week brings remarkable experiences that shape our students’ futures.

From Ignite (Year 9) through to Year 11, our students take part in learning that reaches far beyond the classroom, thanks to our unique industry partnerships with the NHS, The Royal Society, IRIS, AstraZeneca, Unilever, Bristol Myers Squibb and many more.

Our students do not simply learn about science, they do science. They meet the professionals transforming lives today and gain insight into the innovations shaping tomorrow.

Here is a round-up of some of the incredible opportunities they have recently been involved in:

Bristol Myers Squibb Talk – Exploring Routes into Pharmaceutical Careers

We were delighted to welcome professionals from Bristol Myers Squibb, who spoke to students about their roles and the various pathways into careers in pharmaceuticals, including degree apprenticeships.

Over 80 students attended, gaining valuable advice as they begin to consider their next steps. Feedback from students has been extremely positive.

Royal Society Visit – Presenting Research on a Historic Scientific Stage

Students and staff enjoyed an unforgettable day in London at the Royal Society for the national conference themed around the future of practical science in schools.

Year 11 student, Blossom, joined a panel of six alongside sector specialists, answering questions from Katherine Mathieson, Director of the Royal Institution.

Year 10 students Felizian, Hamdhan and Mohieddin presented an academic poster and practical activity on adaptive morphology of insect mouthparts, based on work conducted using an SEM microscope provided through the Institute for Research in Schools.

Delegates praised our students for their confidence, eloquence and scientific knowledge. Many expressed interest in visiting to learn from our commitment to delivering high-quality practical science, particularly at a time when many schools are reducing hands-on activity.

To present in a building once walked by Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, Mary Anning and Ernest Rutherford was truly inspiring for our young scientists.

NHS School & College Safari Trip – Aintree Hospital

Year 10 and Year 11 Health students took part in the NHS School & College Safari at Aintree Hospital, gaining first-hand experience of the breadth of careers within the NHS.

They met health professionals from a wide range of disciplines and took part in practical workshops including CPR demonstrations, VR simulations, laboratory experiments and wellbeing sessions.

Unilever Inspire Programme – Product Innovation Challenge

A group of ten Ignite Scholars visited the Unilever Research & Development Centre to take part in the Unilever Inspire programme and challenge.

Students participated in six workshops covering total product design, formulation, packaging, digital and processing and consumer technical insight.

Experts supported the group in exploring ideas for product development, and students will now share their learning with the wider Scholar cohort to support their challenge entries.

Their enthusiasm, creativity and professionalism were exceptional.
