Future Vet in the Making: Holly's Story

Meet Holly, one of our Year 13 students at Liverpool Life Sciences UTC. Holly joined us for Ignite and is now ready to apply for Veterinary Medicine at university. Her journey proves that getting involved early really pays off!

From Classroom to Career

Holly recently landed a job with Aramark, thanks to our Careers Lead at the school. She was looking for work, and a teacher stepped in: "I speak to Mike a lot about career options, he came to me and said - do you want to have a look at this?"

She quickly moved up to a premium VIP role, which included serving at a big event in the new Everton Stadium. This professional work has really built her confidence. She even said it helped her secure her next big adventure: "I've just done my Camp America interview, so I'm really excited for that." Holly will be heading to the US right after her A-levels finish.

Five Years of Learning at the UTC

Holly didn't know she wanted to be a vet when she started at the UTC. She came in simply because she liked science: "I just came in knowing I like science, so I'll come to this school."

That changed in Year 10 when a teacher offered her a unique chance: "Doctor Dyer came over to me and said, 'I've got a student who's doing an EPQ in veterinary science, do you want to come to Edinburgh on a trip to visit vets?'" That moment started her path to vet school.

Since then, she's piled on the experience, including a work experience placement in a local veterinary practice and volunteering at a local farm. She also attended the Destination Vets summer school at the University of Liverpool, where she made crucial connections: "We did a two-day summer school and I got to speak to some of the academics, and then I also got some work experience out of that as well."

Holly is now applying to universities like Liverpool, Nottingham, and Edinburgh. We're cheering her on for the October UCAS deadline!

Holly's EPQ: The Science of Dog Breeds

Holly's EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) is focused on a really relevant science topic: "It's on genetic disorders in dogs as a result of breeding, so pedigree breeds." She's looking at the rise of genetic disorders in popular dogs like French Bulldogs. This is how she applies the science she learns to real-world issues.

Reflecting on her time here, she’s clear on the benefits:

"I think it's the best thing I've ever done. Compared to my old school, there's so many more opportunities."
